Description
Shell Immersion Cooling Fluid S5 X is a synthetic, single-phase dielectric immersion cooling fluid developed for high-performance computing and data centre server cooling. Made from natural gas using Shell’s Gas-to-Liquids (GTL) technology, it is designed to efficiently remove heat from immersed servers while providing excellent flow, thermal and electrical insulation properties.
Key Features & Benefits
- Single-phase immersion cooling: Remains in liquid form during operation, providing continuous and reliable heat removal.
- Dielectric fluid: Electrically non-conductive, allowing servers and electronic components to operate while fully immersed.
- GTL-based synthetic fluid: Produced using Shell’s Gas-to-Liquids technology for a highly pure and consistent base fluid.
- High cooling efficiency: Excellent heat-transfer and thermodynamic properties help remove heat effectively from high-density computing equipment.
- Excellent flow behaviour: Low viscosity supports efficient circulation through immersion cooling systems.
- High thermal stability: Helps maintain reliable cooling performance under demanding data centre operating conditions.
- Excellent component compatibility: Developed with compatibility with computer and server components in mind.
- Low volatility: Helps support safe operation without requiring sealed tanks or frequent fluid replacement under appropriate operating conditions.
- Non-halogenated: Free from halogenated cooling chemistry.
- Inherently biodegradable: The GTL-based fluid is designed with environmental considerations in mind.
- No ozone depletion potential: The product does not present ozone depletion potential.
- Suitable for natural or forced convection: Can be used in systems where the cooling fluid circulates naturally or is pumped.
Applications
Shell Immersion Cooling Fluid S5 X is designed primarily for:
- Data centre server cooling
- High-performance computing (HPC)
- AI computing infrastructure
- High-density computing systems
- Immersion-cooled computer servers
- Single-phase immersion cooling systems
- Enterprise computing facilities
- Liquid-cooled IT infrastructure
In a single-phase immersion system, servers are submerged in the dielectric fluid. Heated fluid rises through natural convection or is pumped to a heat exchanger, where heat is removed before the cooled fluid returns to the server tank.
